AWF to Release Special Labor Day Preview
Congressional Ratings Sneak Peak, Facts of the Day, & More

Washington, D.C. — The Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF) is an advocacy organization that utilizes research, lobbying and education efforts to protect workers rights and improve the rights of ordinary workers.

As we approach Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2007, it is important to recognize the good and bad acts Congress has taken thus far with regard to worker freedom. AWF recognizes that labor union bosses often act in ways contrary to the best interests of their members, so it will take every opportunity to remind workers of their rights and opportunities in the workplace.

“While there have been a string of several anti-worker freedom bills, from OLMS budget cuts to Davis-Bacon Depression-era military spending, one that particularly sticks out is H.R. 800 which attempted to strip workers rights to a private ballot replaced by “card check” says Brian M. Johnson, Policy Director for AWF.

H.R. 800 would eliminate a worker’s right to a federally-supervised private ballot election. This would be replaced by a kind of open-air petition known as a “card check.” Under this system, workers would lose their right to privacy. Employers, union organizers, and co-workers would all know the worker’s choice about being represented by a union or not.

“With Labor Day around the corner, we are going to make it clear that there are those in Congress who vote to align themselves with Big Labor and line their pockets with union-thug money, at the expense of employee freedom and workers rights; they will have to answer to their constituents,” says Johnson.
