The Alliance for Worker Freedom endorses Rep. Gingrey's (R-GA) Federal Government and Accountability Act of 2009.

In a letter being sent to House members, Rep. Gingrey says:

Title V of the United States Code allows federal employees to use official time for union activities.  My bill, the Federal Employee Accountability Act of 2009, repeals two sections of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 to ensure that no employee of the federal government can use official time to collectively bargain on behalf of a union against their employer.  We have seen an increase in union activity lead to a more inefficient workforce, and it is time to stop subsidizing this problem.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) conducted an extensive survey of 61 executive agencies and departments for FY 2008 outlining the number of official time hours and amount of time wage cost spent on union activity.  OPM reported that 2,893,922 official time hours were used in collective bargaining or arbitration of grievances against an employer in FY 2008.  Further, the report found that in FY 2008 alone, the federal government spent $120,730,471 on these same union activities, an increase from $113,038,094 in FY 2007.

AWF Urges Co-Sponsorship of Rep Gingrey’s Federal Employee Accountability Act of 2009

The Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF) endorses Rep. Gingrey’s “Federal Employee Accountability Act of 2009” which forbids federal employees from using official time for union activities

•    The OPM 2008 report found that the federal government spent $120,730,471 on union activities, an increase from $113,038,094 the previous year, 2007
•    The Citizens Against Government Waste estimated that Gingery’s bill would save an estimated $250 million in taxpayer funds
•    While American families look to curtail wasteful spending, legislators should follow suit and end blind union support.

The Alliance for Worker Freedom is urging all Members to show their support for increasing government accountability by co-sponsoring this bill.

Gingery’s bill allows for a more efficient and streamlined government. Taxpayer dollars will no longer be wasted on bureaucrats’ use of official work time for union activities!
