In 19 days…Iowa will know if Gov. Culver is a friend or enemy of worker freedom.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), a special project of Americans for Tax Reform dedicated to combating anti-worker legislation and promoting free and open labor markets continues to urge the Governor to veto H.F. 2645 which will force binding arbitration on the state.

Currently, 37 states have some form of forced bargaining. These deals vary in degree of transparency, from states that allow public access to bargaining sessions like Florida and Alaska, to states with completely closed, backroom sessions such as Delaware and Connecticut. Johnson says forced bargaining measures, specifically those with binding arbitration, can render the employer or the state helpless to the demands of the union.

In a statement, AWF executive director Brian M. Johnson said, “These backroom, sweetheart deals will restrict the ability of the elected city officials to control benefits and regulate salary. If teachers go on strike and demand more money who will pay their salary increase? – the taxpaying workers in Iowa. If the union demands that all classrooms contain only 10 students, binding arbitration in this bill will make it happen. Who will pay the bill? – the taxpaying workers in Iowa.”
