Sen. Thune (R-SD) & Rep. Duncan (R-TN): Freedom From Gov Competition Act
Senator John Thune (R-SD) and Representative John Duncan (R-SD) have introduced S. 1167/HR 2682, the Freedom from Government Competition Act (FFGC).
Their proposal would require federal agencies to purchase goods and services that are readily accessible from private businesses. According to a study by the federal government, there are 850,000 federal employee performed jobs which could easily be performed by the private sector.
Current legislation pits the federal government against private business; both sectors are trying to produce the same goods or services. This distorted market is one where Americans lose. Tax payers end up funding government programs that crowd out private business, resulting in a complacent and unproductive workforce.
Previous legislation, the Federal Activities Inventory Reform (FAIR) Act, requires an analysis of federal activities to determine which can be performed by the private sector, but the Act provides no details on how to make such a determination. FFGCA contains a clear litmus test when determining whether main street, private business, can provide the same goods and services currently provided by the federal government.
